Civic integration is how the Netherlands expects newcomers to learn the language and how Dutch society works. Most newcomers are legally required to complete it within a set period, and your gemeente is your first point of contact.
Five parts are taken separately at a DUO location: Spreken, Luisteren, Lezen, Schrijven and KNM. You register through Mijn Inburgering with DigiD, each part costs 50 euro, and you may retake it.
Since January 2025 a new integration system applies to most people who start then, with a B1 language requirement and different exams. People who started earlier usually finish under the old A2 system. Check with your gemeente or DUO.
After five years with a valid residence permit you can apply to the IND to become a Dutch citizen, provided you hold an inburgeringsdiploma or exemption, can support yourself and have no serious criminal record.
